Mary Guzman

Founder/CEO, Crown Jewel Insurance

Mary Guzman is an insurance industry veteran, having spent 25+ years as a broker, advising clients on a myriad of risks to their businesses, most recently with a focus on all things related to technology, media, and intellectual property.  She is considered a “disruptor” in the industry and has now tackled both the broker and underwriting sides of insurance. Mary is a creator of new products and/or capacity from within large brokerage firms where she led teams to growth and success, and a passionate advocate and speaker regarding risks related to the convergence of all things intangible, specifically the protection of US critical infrastructure and trade secrets.

Mrs. Guzman left the retail insurance brokerage business after a successful career to create four unique products, supported by turnkey risk management services, that are not available elsewhere in the now crowded “cyber” insurance market, where Ms. Guzman was a pioneer going back to its beginning nearly twenty years ago. As an underwriter and CEO, Mary was the first to develop the first-party coverage for the intrinsic value of trade secrets. To accomplish this goal, she worked with her peers to develop of full suite of risk management services to drop into a company’s ERM that made the market comfortable enough to offer coverage for the fair market value of the fastest growing form of IP, trade secrets. No one had been able to get this done prior to Mary. Her belief in the concept was why she left her successful broker career and became an underwriter.

Ms. Guzman spent the last ten years with McGriff Seibels, & Williams/BB&T, the sixth largest US broker. She and her team developed innovative products and created market capacity for a variety of industries, concentrating on customized risk and insurance solutions for the Fortune 2000 companies. Ms. Guzman was instrumental in helping McGriff grow its practice from the ground up to become one of the most respected teams in the country and grew her personal book of business to one of the 20 largest in the company. She has been involved with the DHS and other government agencies as part of a public/private partnership focusing on security of US Critical Infrastructure. She was the first to create “failure to supply” coverage in the utilities space and worked in the market to build a $125 million line slip. Shortly after, Mary led her team to do a very similar achievement only this time in the Oil and Gas Space. Mary was able to offer the ability for the insureds to by-back cyber property damage exclusion which took a significant amount of negotiation and research.

Prior to being at McGriff, Mrs. Guzman served as the SVP, Large Account Team Leader at Willis for 4 years. She started her career at Marsh & McLennan Companies where she became one of the country’s first leaders in Cyber/E&O Practice.

Ms. Guzman is a frequent speaker and has written several publications related to information technology and security risk. As a subject matter expert, she has spoken at professional conferences over 100 times. Most recently, Mary was named a 2021 Business Insurance Women to Watch.
