SVP and Chief of Staff - Global Risk Solutions, Liberty Mutual Insurance
Janelle Edem is Senior Vice President and Chief of Staff, Global Risk Solutions at Liberty Mutual Insurance. Liberty Mutual is the sixth largest property and casualty insurer globally based on 2019 gross written premium and is ranked 77th on the Fortune 100 list of largest corporations in the U.S. based on 2019 revenue. Global Risk Solutions (GRS), one of Liberty Mutual’s two strategic business units, is a global commercial and specialty lines (re)insurer, providing a full range of innovative traditional insurance, specialty and reinsurance risk solutions to businesses around the world. In her role, Janelle leads GRS’ strategic planning and process excellence work and is responsible for organizing, prioritizing and moving forward critical strategic issues to facilitate efficient decision making for GRS’ executive office.
Janelle joined Liberty Mutual in 2005 as a management consultant in the Corporate Strategy & Research Group. There she worked on various strategic business issues across several business
functions, including deciding Liberty’s direct sales strategy for personal auto insurance in China.
Since then, Janelle has held various leadership roles at Liberty including Director of Medical Bill Review, where she managed a 250-person operation, and Vice President, Commercial Insurance Claims where she started up the advanced claims analytics function and led the successful design, development and launch of an industry-leading workers’ compensation claims predictive model, which later won the Business Insurance magazine 2012 Innovation Award. Most recently, Janelle was the Vice President and General Manager for UPS Distribution & Service, responsible for underwriting, account management, risk control, and client service delivery for one of Liberty’s major commercial accounts.
In addition to her professional responsibilities, over the years Janelle has served in various other leadership roles at Liberty including in the Men As Allies Council and in employee resource groups (ERGs) for women, employees of African descent and their allies.
Janelle received a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics, with a concentration in Actuarial Science (with Honors), from the University of the West Indies, Jamaica and an MBA in Strategic Management from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. She was recognized by the Wharton Club of Boston with the 2015 Joseph Wharton Young Alumni Leader award for
extraordinary leadership in the Boston business community and society at large. Janelle serves on the Leadership Board for Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and is an alum of LeadBoston and The Partnership Inc.’s Next Generation Executive leadership program.
